Wine-ish x ACID Bar Takeover
When ACID, Food and Wine bar calls – you answer! We were recently invited to host a Bar takeover by the dynamic duo behind ACID Food and Wine Bar in Parktown North, Johannesburg to promote some of the worlds most famous wine regions that we are currently learning about through WSET. From one dynamic duo to another, we made a smashing success of it!
From Italy through to Spain and everywhere in between, we poured some of the must-know grapes from around the world. In true Wine-ish style, If there’s one thing we’ll do, it’s ensuring that the love for wine is always met by un-intimidating education.
It was a glorious evening of wine discovery and tasting, just as we like it! Thank you to The International Wine Education Centre, one of WSET’s only approved service providers of WSET qualifications in South Africa for helping us bring ACID patrons and Wine-ish lovers a taste of ‘Wines of the World’. Your bar ladies for the night? The lady-girls of Wine-ish of course.
We pulled out a stellar line-up of international wines for tasting and experiencing. The wine up for the evening was as follows:
From Italy – Prosecco
Ponte Villoni Extra Dry NV – This lovely Prosecco from Northern Italy is light and crisp with hints of apple and pear, and a delicate fruity finish. It’s a well-structured, medium-bodied bubble that pairs perfectly with an Italian seafood dish. We guarantee you that this ideal summer find will have you coming back for another (and another) glass.
From Portugal – Vinho Verde
By Quinta da Aveleda. A Pure unoaked and aromatic white wine with fresh citrus, stone fruit and grassy notes. We described this as Sauvignon Balnc’s cooler, trendier sister and we think it stuck! Bright and pale straw colour, almost resembling a green colour – this Vinho Verde became a crowd favourite very quickly for its fine purity and bite. A crisp acidity with youthful, salivating finish.
From France – Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah Rosé
A Rhône-style Rosé by La Vieille Ferme Ventoux. A charismatic blend of Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah – soft-pink in colour packed full of rich, red fruit aromas. The smooth follow through on the palate finished off the experience of this wine with fruity notes, subtle freshness and an all round soft balance. This one calls for a fine summers day, preferably enjoyed at leisure in the south of France.
From Chile – Carmenere.
From the Cachapoal Valley, Chile followed this Carmenere by Chateau Los Boldos. Just divine! This wine is full of chocolatey, mildly spicy and exuberant notes on both the nose and the palate. Carmenere can in many ways be likened to a Merlot for it’s juicy, rich and ripe red and black fruit profile. The silky smooth finish is balanced with a textured mouthful owing to its tannic structure, leaving much for discussion and plenty more to be desired!
From Spain – Fino Sherry
A gorgeous, gorgeous girl and undoubtedly the highlight of the night was the Sandmen Sherry Fino from Andalucia, Spain. Pale straw yellow in colour, with shades of gold, Sandeman Sherry Fino is unassuming at first sight and full of boldness upong first sip! The golden, honey tones follow through to the palate firstly through a light, fruity and delicate entry on the palate and then a closing off with a rich, decadent yet fresh finish. Both a perfect start to the evening when paired with a salty appetiser or a memorable ending to a wine-filled evening!
